UMW Buildings Project Contract

UMW Buildings Contract (Cassie, Kayle, Kay, Cammy, Sam)

Mission Statement

As a group, we will create a website detailing the forty-seven buildings on the University of Mary Washington’s campus. The aim of this project is to ascertain the historical significance of each building, who the building was named for and their significance, and the basic history of the building itself. Each description will include the name of building and a biography of the person it was named for as well as:

– when it was constructed

– past and current purposes

– renovations

-We do not intend to impose on the scholarship which Dr. Spencer of the Historic Preservation Department is conducting.

-Special features of the website

-past and current pictures of campus buildings

-an interactive map of campus buildings, which will give a brief description of the building presented and will link to the larger page about the building.

-a page on the history of the University of Mary Washington

-here is our site: http://buildings.umwblogs.org/

-Miscellaneous Aspects

If the progression of research and uploading to the site allows for extra time, we will include a virtual tour of campus. However, if time does not allow for this task, we will have to alter this contract.

-Technological Tools

The group aims to use UMWBlogs as the platform to present our information.  The website will have an interactive map with pictures and descriptions of the UMW Buildings. Next to the map will be a section to add a welcome message which will explain the mission of the site. Below the map will be the three categories of buildings, Academic Buildings, Residence Halls, and Other Significant Buildings (such as Marye House, Brent House, the Bell Tower), that will function as RSS feeds. The categories will contain individual posts for each building. There will also be a menu across the top of the page which includes the homepage, the categories of buildings, and a separate page for the history of the university.

We also intend to use Google Maps to create the interactive map which will include pictures and a brief description of the building. To edit and enhance pictures of campus we will use Photoshop or a program of similar capability. If there is enough time to conduct a virtual tour of campus, we would like to utilize the video equipment in the Digital Media Lab in Monroe Hall and then use iMovie (also in the Digital Media Lab and with the help of DTLT) to edit and finalize the tour.

Communication and Organization: Our group uses Google Documents and Gmail for all group communication.
